What a disappointing performance this was from the Old Firm which many supporters thought was the poorest for years. After a promising first 15 minutes when outside half Callum Iwanski put the Old Firm ahead with a 30 metre penalty, Mount had little to offer in defence or attack. In the first half, flanker Dai Richards and scrum half Ross Davies threatened the Treorchy line but that was about it. Penalty after penalty was conceded by the Old Firm throughout the game which gave Treorchy easy ground. The Mount defence was at sixes and sevens throughout, with the first try for the home team scored from a failure to reorganise quickly enough and this was followed by a kick into space exploiting a defenceless Mount 22 which a home player latched on to and cantered over to put the home team 15-3 up at half time.
Things got worse in the second half as early tries from weak tackling and poor defence at a couple of mauls saw Treorchy take the score up to 36-3 before a scrambled try in the corner late on completed the scoring.
There’s nothing to gain in dwelling over this defeat. The Old Firm need to learn from it and move on quickly, ensuring the basics are right.
